Flow Meter Application Index: Selection Reference for Industrial Mediums

Quick Answer: The fluid drives the flow meter decision, not the other way around. Conductive water-based media match well with electromagnetic flow meters. Fuels, oils, and thick syrups need positive displacement or Coriolis mass meters. This reference index covers the most common industrial fluids our customers ask about across Southeast Asia, Oceania, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.

Every week we receive enquiries from engineers and plant managers who know their process fluid but get lost in flow meter options. They tell us the pipe size, temperature, pressure, and medium, and we recommend the right technology from our Silver Automation Instruments range. This article groups those real applications by medium type so you can speed up your own selection.

Water, Wastewater, and Desalination Applications

Clean water, raw water, sewage, and seawater are all conductive enough for an electromagnetic flow meter. The Silver AMF series magmeter works from DN15 up to DN2000 with a choice of hard rubber, PTFE, or EPDM liners. For a municipal water supply project in the Philippines, we supplied DN400 AMF meters with 316L electrodes and 4-20 mA HART output. If the pipe cannot be disturbed, our Silver USFM clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter mounts externally and handles pipe diameters from DN25 to DN3000. In reverse osmosis plants, use titanium electrodes to handle the aggressive brine stream.

Fuels, Oils, and High-Viscosity Media

Diesel, heavy fuel oil, palm oil, bitumen, and glucose syrup have low or zero conductivity. Electromagnetic meters simply will not work. For batch loading of diesel into tanker trucks in the Middle East, we offer the Silver OG oval gear flow meter. It handles viscosities from 5 to 2000 cP at a typical accuracy of ±0.5%. A customer in Vietnam uses our OG-AL aluminum body oval gear meter for biofuel blending and logs 3000 L per batch with a local totalizer. When the fluid is aggressive, high temperature, or needs mass measurement, our Silver CMF Coriolis mass flow meter is the tool. These meters measure mass flow directly in kg/h regardless of viscosity changes. You can measure palm oil at 80 °C with 0.1% accuracy, no density compensation needed. Most engineers skip the trial and error and go straight to Coriolis for edible oil custody transfer.

Chemical, Acid, and Solvent Dosing

Many chemicals are conductive and suit magnetic flow meters when liners and electrodes are selected correctly. Hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, and sulfuric acid ask for PTFE or PFA liner and tantalum or platinum electrodes. For a paint factory in Indonesia, we built Silver AMF meters with PTFE liner and Hastelloy C electrodes on DN25 lines for solvent-based coatings. The plant operates in a Zone 2 area, so the meters carry ATEX certification. Non-conductive solvents like toluene or xylene need a Coriolis meter or, for larger pipes, an ultrasonic flow meter with special transducers. Silver Automation Instruments also supplies pressure transmitters on the same loop to monitor line pressure alongside flow. In practice, attaching a 4-20 mA pressure transmitter and a flow meter to a single controller gives faster troubleshooting.

Gas, Compressed Air, and Steam Flow

Saturated steam, compressed air, and natural gas are measured best with vortex flow meters or thermal mass flow meters. Our Silver VFM vortex meter works in pipe sizes from DN25 to DN300 for steam up to 250 °C and includes an integrated PT100 temperature sensor for pressure and temperature compensation. We shipped 20 VFM meters to a textile plant in Bangladesh to monitor steam distribution across dyeing machines. For compressed a
