Flow Meter Connector Pinouts: Standard M12 and Terminal Block Wiring for Field Techs
Quick Answer: For most Silver Automation Instruments flow meters with a standard M12 connector, pin 1 is 24 V DC positive, pin 3 is 0 V, and pin 4 is the 4-20 mA analog output. Terminal block models use screw terminals marked L, N, PE, I+ and I-. Always check the wiring label on the meter housing because pin positions can shift with pulse outputs, RS485, or HART options.
Why Connector Pinouts Cause Field Failures
Most engineers skip this part until a meter does not power up or reads zero. We have seen wrong M12 pinouts on customer sites many times. A water utility in Malaysia spent one afternoon chasing a dead 4-20 mA signal on an electromagnetic flowmeter because the site electrician assumed pin 2 was the analog output. The drawing showed pin 4. This is common.
Do not assume a flow meter follows the same pinout as a pressure transmitter. Pressure transmitters are often 2-wire loop powered. Most Silver Instruments flow meters are 4-wire devices that need separate supply and signal pairs. That single difference causes more callouts than any other wiring fault on site.
Standard M12 Pinout for 4-20 mA and Pulse Outputs
Silver Instruments flow meters often ship with a 4-pin M12 A-coded connector on compact models. The factory default for a 24 V DC powered meter with one analog output is simple. Pin 1 brown wire is 24 V DC positive. Pin 3 blue wire is 0 V DC. Pin 4 black wire is the active 4-20 mA signal. Pin 2 is not used on basic analog units.
Some models use a 5-pin M12 when a pulse output is added. In that case pin 2 white wire is the pulse output and pin 5 gray wire is the common return. Do not guess. Open the terminal cover and read the pin label printed on the circuit board. That label is the final authority, not the cable color from another brand.
M12 Pinouts for HART, RS485, and Coriolis Models
Coriolis mass flow meters and thermal mass flow meters with HART often use an 8-pin M12 circular connector on compact sizes from DN15 to DN50. The pinout is not universal. Silver Instruments uses pin 1 for 24 V DC positive, pin 3 for 0 V DC, pin 4 for 4-20 mA HART plus, pin 5 for RS485 A, pin 6 for RS485 B, and pin 8 for the shield. Some OEM cables swap pin 4 and pin 5. For that reason we recommend using the factory cable or checking the pin table in the order confirmation.
If the installation is in ATEX Zone 1, use an Ex rated M12 cable or an Ex d terminal enclosure. A standard cable with a loose gland can leak gas into the housing. We have seen this on a gas metering skid in Nigeria at 12 bar where a wrong cable gland caused a hot work permit delay.
Terminal Block Wiring for Panel Mount and Remote Versions
Larger flow meters in DN40 to DN300 sizes often use a terminal block inside a wall mount or field mount housing. The terminal labels are printed on the board. AC powered electromagnetic flow meters use L for live, N for neutral, and PE for protective earth. The 4-20 mA current output is usually I+ and I-. Pulse output is P+ and P-. RS485 Modbus is A and B. HART is often shared on the I+ terminal with loop power. For 24 V DC models the terminal block shows 24V+ and 0V. Some units accept 12 to 36 V DC and the label will state that range.
A chemical plant in Chile connected 240 V AC to the 24 V DC terminal of a Coriolis meter. The result was a burnt power supply board. That repair cost more than a factory cable. The technician later told us he did not read the label because the terminal block looked similar to a pressure transmitter he had wired before.
In practice a food plant in Vietnam measures coconut milk at 40 cP and 80 °C with a Coriolis meter sized for 100 to 1200 kg/h. The terminal block w

Wiring Rules for Long Cable Runs and Noisy Sites
Field techs ask us how far they can run a 4-20 mA signal. The answer depends on total loop resistance and cable size. With 18 AWG twisted pair shielded cable, a 24 V DC supply can normally drive a 500 ohm load over 500 meters. If the loop has a HART communicator, keep total capacitance low and avoid VFD cables in the same tray. For RS485 Modbus, use a daisy chain from one device to the next. Do not star wire. Put one 120 ohm termination resistor at each end of the bus.
Here is the thing about grounding. Use the shield only at one end, usually at the control panel. At the meter end leave the shield floating. For electromagnetic flowmeters installed on plastic or lined pipe, install a grounding ring or grounding electrode. The electrode must contact the process fluid. Without that earth path, the signal can drift and the meter may show an empty pipe alarm even when the pipe is full.
M12 vs Terminal Block: Which One to Spec
For quick replacement jobs and compact skids, M12 is faster. The connector is sealed and the cable can be prewired. For outdoor plants in Southeast Asia, choose a stainless steel or nickel plated M12 body. In coastal areas near seawater spray, the standard brass nickel M12 may corrode within two years. We have seen this on a seawater flow meter at a desalination plant in Oman. The intake conductivity there was near 50 000 µS/cm. For heavy duty process lines with DN50 and above, terminal block wiring is better. The screw terminals allow thicker power cables and local service without special M12 tooling.
FAQ on Flow Meter Connector Pinouts
What is the most common M12 pinout for a 4-20 mA flow meter?
Pin 1 is 24 V DC positive, pin 3 is 0 V, and pin 4 is the 4-20 mA signal. Pin 2 is not used on basic analog models.
Can I wire a 4-20 mA flow meter with only two wires?
No. A standard 4-wire flow meter needs separate supply and signal pairs. A true 2-wire loop powered flow meter exists for some simple liquid applications, but most Silver Instruments Coriolis and electromagnetic models are 4-wire devices.
How do I know if my meter uses 24 V DC or 110 V AC?
Look at the label next to the terminal block. It will state 24 V DC, 85 to 265 V AC, or 12 to 36 V DC. On M12 models, most compact units are 24 V DC only.
Why does my flow meter show zero flow when the pump is running?
Check the 4-20 mA wiring first. Reverse polarity on the signal pair or wrong M12 pin will show as zero or a fault. Then check grounding, empty pipe detection, and the orientation of the meter.
Can I use a local M12 cable from another brand?
Only if the pinout matches the Silver Instruments wiring table. Many brands use pin 2 as 4-20 mA. Ours uses pin 4 on default analog units. A wrong cable can damage the analog input card.
